The rationale behind exosomes for hair

Exosomes are extremely small vesicles that cells release to communicate with one another. They carry growth factors, signaling proteins and fragments of genetic material. A useful way to picture them: not the cell itself, but the envelope the cell sends out.

A hair follicle is not a static structure. It cycles through growth, regression and resting phases. In most patterns of hair loss that cycle becomes disrupted — follicles spend less time growing, and hairs emerge finer and shorter with each round, a process called miniaturization.

The theory behind exosome for hair is to deliver supportive signals to the environment around those follicles, so that the conditions for growth are more favorable. Nothing is being implanted, and no new follicles are created. What a session actually involves

On the scalp, exosomes are usually paired with a delivery method that helps the product reach the right depth — most commonly microneedling.

The typical sequence

  • Assessment. The type of hair loss is established first — androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, or something else. Blood work may be requested to rule out contributing factors such as iron or thyroid issues.
  • Preparation. The scalp is cleansed, and a topical anesthetic may be applied for comfort.
  • Microneedling delivery. Very fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the scalp. This supports absorption and prompts a mild repair response of its own. The product is distributed across the area during or immediately after this step.
  • Alternatively, fine-needle point injections may be used instead.

A session usually takes around half an hour. Redness and tenderness for a few hours afterward are common. You will be given a window before washing, coloring or heavy sweating.

  • Lack of standardization between products makes results hard to compare.

In practice, this means exosomes are better understood as a supportive addition in suitable cases, not a replacement for treatments with a solid evidence base. Who might be a candidate

  • Early to moderate thinning, with follicular structure still present.
  • An existing medical or PRP-based plan you would like to support.
  • A reason PRP is less suitable, or a preference against blood-derived treatment.

It may not be appropriate where there is complete baldness in the area, active scalp infection or an inflammatory scalp condition, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in certain systemic conditions, or when an untreated underlying cause is driving the loss.
