What is calcium hydroxyapatite usually comes up while reading a product's contents. The name suggests something made in a laboratory, but it is in fact the name of a mineral found naturally in the body. This article covers what the substance is, what it does in aesthetic treatments and how it separates from hyaluronic acid.

What is calcium hydroxyapatite?

Short answer: A calcium-phosphate mineral found naturally in bone and teeth. In aesthetic treatments it is used as microparticles suspended in a carrier gel.

That the substance already exists in the body is a feature that reduces its being handled as a foreign object. That is not a safety guarantee on its own, but it does explain its behaviour.

Particle size and the density of the carrier gel vary between products. Those two variables determine how the product behaves in the tissue and which regions it can be used in.

What does it do in aesthetic treatments?
