Marionette lines
The anatomy of lines from the corners of the mouth towards the chin, and individual assessment.
The short answer
Marionette lines are grooves running down from the mouth corners towards the chin. Reduced skin and connective-tissue support, shifts in facial fat, changes in jawline volume and movements of the muscles around the mouth can make them more prominent with age.
Treatment is not simply a matter of injecting filler into a line. The mouth corners, the area in front of the chin, jawline and mid-face support are assessed together. A suitable method is chosen after a doctor has examined the person's anatomy and risks.
Is filler the only option?
No. Depending on the underlying cause, options may include filler, approaches targeting skin quality, or no procedure. Excess volume can distort natural facial proportions. The goal is a balanced transition rather than completely erasing every line.
What should you know about safety?
Filler can cause temporary swelling and bruising. Rare but serious vascular complications are also possible. Before treatment, the product, technique, expected limitations and emergency plan should be discussed clearly.
