Salmon DNA (PDRN) Treatment: What It Is and Who It Suits
What is salmon DNA (PDRN) treatment, what does it do, how many sessions are planned? Side effects, who should avoid it and realistic expectations.
One of the questions we hear most often at the moment is: "What is salmon DNA treatment, and does it really work?" Known in everyday language as a "youth vaccine" or "DNA vaccine", this treatment is, medically speaking, the injection of products containing PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) or polynucleotides into the skin. The aim is not to change the shape of the face, but to support skin quality and the skin's own repair capacity. In this article we explain, in a calm and measured way, what the treatment is, what it can and cannot do, its possible side effects and who it is not suitable for.
What is salmon DNA (PDRN)? Is it the same as polynucleotide?
PDRN is the general name for short chain fragments made of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. The raw material of the products used in aesthetic practice is usually obtained from the reproductive tissue of fish such as salmon or trout, and it is highly purified. "Salmon DNA" is the everyday shorthand for all of these products.
In the literature, the terms PDRN and polynucleotide (PN) are sometimes used interchangeably, but differences in chain length and product structure have been described. This is why the question of which product and which content is being used matters. It is right to ask your physician about the brand, licensing status and content of the product before treatment.
What does salmon DNA do?
Salmon DNA is a skin quality treatment that aims to support skin that looks hydrated, fresh and elastic. Physicians generally consider it in situations such as:
- Dull, tired and dry looking skin
- Fine lines and thinned, crepey skin (particularly around the eyes, on the neck and on the décolleté)
- Some mild texture irregularities and support of skin healing after procedures
What matters is knowing the limits. Salmon DNA is not a filler; it does not replace lost volume, does not reshape the facial contours and does not take the place of treatment for deep lines. If there is a marked hollowing, the main concern is volume rather than skin quality, and a different approach may be needed. In some patients, planning the two together may also be discussed; this decision is made at the consultation.
What does the scientific evidence say?
A recent systematic review brought together randomized clinical trials examining polynucleotide and PDRN treatments. In these studies, favorable changes were reported in wrinkle related measures, in wound and scar healing and in patient satisfaction; the most consistent findings came from the wound healing field. No serious treatment related adverse events were reported. However, the studies were small, the protocols differed from one another and follow up periods were limited. In other words, the evidence is promising, but larger studies are needed before strong and definitive conclusions can be drawn. The effect varies from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.
Is salmon DNA a vaccine, mesotherapy or a filler?
- It is not a vaccine. The word "vaccine" is a common usage; the treatment is not intended to create immunity.
- It is not a filler. It has a fluid consistency and is not used to add volume.
- It is related to mesotherapy. The product is usually applied with a mesotherapy like technique: very small amounts delivered with fine needle injections into the superficial layers of the skin. In other words, mesotherapy is a technique, while salmon DNA is a content delivered with that technique. It differs in content from classic vitamin and mineral mixtures.
How is salmon DNA applied, and how many sessions are needed?
The treatment begins with an assessment of the skin structure and the concern. If needed, a numbing cream is used before the procedure, and then the product is applied to the skin in small doses with fine needles. A session is usually short, and most people can return to daily life afterwards.
The number of sessions varies with the person's age, skin condition and the product used. Clinical sources in Turkey mostly describe a series of a few sessions at intervals of a few weeks; it is commonly described that no marked change is expected after the first session and that the effect builds up with sessions. These numbers are a general framework, not a standard. It is worth knowing that the effect is not continuous, that its duration differs from person to person, and that in some people maintenance sessions may be considered over time.
What are the side effects of salmon DNA?
The side effects reported in published studies and clinical guides are mostly mild and temporary:
- Small bumps at the injection points, redness and tenderness
- Mild swelling, small bruises on thin skin
- Small firm areas that disappear within a few days
- An increase in acne in some people with oily skin
Rare but possible risks include allergic reaction, infection at the injection site and small nodules. Because the product is fish derived, an allergy history is particularly important. The purification process removes most of the fish proteins, but this does not mean the risk disappears completely. If redness increases over several days, or if pain, discharge, fever, or widespread itching and rash develop, you should contact a physician without delay.
Who should not have salmon DNA?
In the following situations the treatment is not recommended, or needs a separate discussion with your physician:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: It is generally not applied because safety data are insufficient.
- Known fish or seafood allergy: It is not applied in particular with a serious allergy history; where the history is uncertain, a physician's assessment comes first.
- Active infection or inflammation in the treatment area: If there is active acne, a cold sore or an eczema flare, we wait until the area settles.
- Bleeding disorders or use of blood thinners: These are assessed separately because of the risk of bruising and bleeding.
- People who do not wish to use animal derived products: The product is fish derived; this preference affects the options.
- Autoimmune and chronic diseases: A personalized assessment together with your physician is needed.
How is the right decision made?
Our approach in medical aesthetics is to preserve rather than to change. Salmon DNA is not necessary or suitable for every skin. For some people, simple steps such as sun protection, regular skin care and a good sleep routine come first; for others a different method is more appropriate. At the consultation, your skin structure, your expectations, your medications and your allergy history are assessed together, and whether the treatment suits you is decided at the end of that conversation. Making sure that the product is original, licensed and prepared from an unopened box is also part of safety.
Frequently asked questions
Is the salmon DNA vaccine really a vaccine? No. The name is an established popular usage. The treatment is the injection of a product containing PDRN or polynucleotides into the skin, and it is not intended to create immunity.
How long does the effect of salmon DNA last? The duration varies with the person's age, skin condition and the product, and it cannot be predicted in advance. The effect is not continuous; in some people maintenance sessions may be planned over time.
Can salmon DNA be done during pregnancy or breastfeeding? Because safety data are insufficient, it is generally not applied during these periods.
Can someone with a fish allergy have salmon DNA? The product is fish derived. It is generally not applied to people with a known fish or seafood allergy; the final decision is made after the physician's assessment.
Does salmon DNA replace filler? No. It does not add volume; it aims to support skin quality. If there is volume loss, a different approach may be needed.
